Daily Report
Las Vegas, May 4, 1997. Another beautiful spring day in Las Vegas. Very little wind, sunny with more clouds than normal, and a high temperature in the mid 80's.
Smoking Survey: Dr. Max Stern was the only smoker at the final table.

PENALTY BOX

The WSOP Floorpeople are strictly enforcing the rules, with zero tolerance. Although no official list of violators is maintained, all of the following have received a 20 minute penalty during the 1997 WSOP. Most of the penalties were for using abusive language or throwing cards.
Huck SeedJohnny ChanUnknown
Phil HelmuthJohn BonettiUnknown
J. J. VolpeNhut TranJeff Chapman

Artie Cobb who is famous for his huge collection of bizarre hats, sported a rather plain baseball cap at the final table today. Printed on the hat was "SHOW ME THE MONEY", and he wore a Tee shirt that proclaimed "ALL I WANT IS YOUR MONEY". Artie also had a Frog critter doll named "Croaker" sitting in his beverage holder on the table. Croaker was dressed in cowboy gear and had a tin star on his chest. Artie tried to put his eye glasses on Croaker, but Croaker successfully resisted Artie's efforts.
rec.gambling.poker's Kim Scheinberg is 1/1 in single table satellites for the 1997 WSOP. Kim bested some pretty big name competition, including John Bonetti, to take the money at her $320 buy-in table.
J. J. Volpe, the chip leader going into today's final table, wore a sharp looking Yankee Civil War Cavalry hat, dark eye shades and cowboy boots to go along with his handlebar mustache.
Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemorative coins ($20 + tax) available today. As long as they are available, I will purchase a coin(s) for anyone who will pick them up COD from me in Las Vegas sometime in the near future. I don't want to get into the mailing business though. They don't have a whole lot of them left.
The web site for the live WSOP TV feed "www.wsop.com" is still on a maybe next day basis, and I don't think that Binion's Las Vegas web site is up yet either.

SINGLE TABLE SATELLITES

Today's featured single table satellite, being run by Becky Kerber and Barbara Lotief, was Omaha 8 which will be tomorrow's tournament. Ten players buy-in for $320 each, receive $1,200 in chips and compete for six $500 tournament chips + $100 cash.

$320 buy-in no-limit single tables continue to be run every day. These are ten handed and the winner gets six $500 tournament chips + $100 cash.

SUPER SATELLITES

The No-Limit Super Satellites that are very ably run by Patty Hughes and Rudy Lotief, start at 8:30 PM each evening. Last night there were 12 ten handed tables competing for $10,000 Final Event seats and cash. Buy-ins are $220 for $200 in chips, and re-buys can be made for $200 during the first hour of play. Blinds start at $5/10 and increase every 20 minutes. There were 149 entrants, who made a total of 147 re-buys last night. Here are last nights pay outs:

Tibor Tolni, Gustavo Weiss, Melissa Hayden, Paul Ladanyi, and John Spadavecchia each won a $10,000 seat for the final championship event plus $331 in cash.

*** Artie Cobb finishes 2nd and Dr. Max Stern wins the $2500 7 Card Stud High-Low Split 8 or Better WSOP Championship at 8:18 PM.

Final Table Chip Standings - Seat Positions

Missing Picture
Dr. Max Stern, a retired Costa Rican-born pediatrician, outduelled a record field to capture the $2,500 buy in Seven Card High-Low Split title. His victory came eight days after Maria Stern took the $1,500 Seven Card Stud event -- the first time in World Series of Poker history that a man and wife have won gold bracelets in the same year.

Stern, a 57 year-old poker enthusiast, collected $117,000 for his eighth in-the-money WSOP finish which includes a winner's bracelet two years ago in Omaha High-Low Split. And, the victory was the ninth by a non-American-born player in the first 12 events of this World Series.

"This has been the most exciting day I've ever had in poker," Stern said. "And to play against Artie Cobb, Frank Henderson and Jay Heimowitz and beat them is the thrill of a lifetime." He confided that 10 years ago when he and his wife came to Las Vegas, "Artie was good enough to teach me some poker wisdom."

Stern said he had been down to just $500 in chips on the opening day, with the limits at $200-$400. "I made an unbelievable comeback to get to the final table," he said.

Stern and Cobb fought heads-up for just under an hour in what both called a "friendly war" which saw four chip-lead changes. Each player climbed back from near-elimination until Stern finally scooped the key hand with two pair when Cobb missed a bicycle and low. A few moments later Cobb was all-in on 5th street with another straight and low draw (3-8/6-9-7) against Stern's A-8/5-10-10. Cobb caught J-J, not enough to beat Stern's tens and eights.

For this, his 3rd runner-up finish to go with three WSOP titles, Cobb collected $58,500 which brought his total winnings to $564,875. A 54 year-old investor and gaming devotee, Cobb has been in the money at the World Series 16 times. "It was a great match,"he said. "I feel fantastic. The best man won. He deserved it, he played a great tournament. If I couldn't win, I wanted Max to win." Cobb, known for his colorful attire and good-luck oddities at poker tables, said, "I'm proud to be able to participate in the best tournament in the world and to maintain a pretty good quality of play against the best players in the world."

Frank Henderson, another World Series luminary, took third place and $29,500, his 27th time in the money which includes a gold bracelet and a runner-up finish to Johnny Chan in the 1987 Championship Event. Henderson, 65, a retired piping engineer, has been coming to the WSOP since the late l970s. Asked how he felt about this fourth time already in the money this year, he said, "I just had no legitimate starting hands. I tried to steal a few pots. When the smoke clears tomorrow, I'll be satisfied. It's enjoyable and exciting to make the final table, and this was a pretty tough one with fine, veteran players." His WSOP winnings now total $766,298.

Fourth place went to Jay Heimowitz, who ranks 20th on the WSOP's Top Money Winners list with $963,062 for 22 finishes in the money. The holder of four gold bracelets, Heimowitz, a 59 year-old Budweiser wholesaler, said "This was a fine event. I played as well as I could. I've missed just a couple of years at the World Series since 1975. I absolutely love it. And I think the current international success is great -- it shows poker's popularity, with information in books, videos, etc. out around the world for anyone who wants it." He was eliminated when he ran into Stern's straight in the first five cards.

J.J. Volpe, a former publishing marketing executive who said he is the "youngest Italian-American poker player here," finished fifth, unable to retain the chip lead he held at start of final table action. He has now won $28,240 in five finishes in the money at the WSOP.

Sixth place went to Skip Wilson, cashing for the third time and doubling his total earnings to $22,908.

Poker Veteran Chuck Thompson took seventh place, increasing his WSOP winnings to $141,188.

Canadian WSOP newcomer Rick Widdis finished eighth, unable to make a move from his short-stack start at the final table.
