The Showdown
Binion's Horseshoe, May 6, 1996 -- Donny Kerr, a 40-year-old
recreational poker player from Sugarland, Texas, topped a record field of 167
entrants last night to win the 16th event of the 27th annual World Series of
Poker at Binions Horseshoe Hotel and Casino. For his first- place finish in
the $3,000 buy-in limit Texas Holdem competition, Kerr was awarded $200,400
and a custom-designed 14-karat gold bracelet to commemorate his victory.
This is the first World Series of Poker title for Kerr, who exulted, "Its
indescribable -- the biggest win of my career. Its just great." A private
investigator in Houston, Texas, Kerr has been playing poker for 20 years and
has finished in the money in one previous World Series tournament.
Placing second in the Texas Holdem event and winning $100,200 was Mike Halford
of Memphis, Tennessee. A 41-year-old recreational player, Halford also
finished in the money in the Texas Holdem tournament held April 23 and has
cashed in several other major poker competitions. He has played poker for 10
years.
Noli Francisco, a 54-year-old recreational poker player from West New York,
New Jersey, won third place and $50,100. This marks the 12th in-the-money
finish at the World Series for Francisco, who also has to his credit several
titles from other major poker competitions.
Finishing in fourth place for $32,565 was Joanne J.J. Bortner, a 31-year-old
professional player from Palo Alto, California, and a poker hostess for Bay
101 Casino in San Jose. This is the highest finish to date for a woman in this
years World Series.
The 1996 World Series of Poker continues at the Horseshoe through May 16. The
$2,500 buy-in limit Seven Card Stud event begins today at noon, followed by
the $2,500 buy-in pot-limit Omaha competition on May 7.
